Ottawa, ON
Nestled at the confluence of the Ottawa, Rideau, and Gatineau rivers and sitting on the border between the provinces of Quebec and Ontario, Ottawa is one of the world's most beautiful capitals. A truly international city, Ottawa's vibrant cosmopolitan character is shaped by the rich blend of cultures within its many communities. Throughout the year, this diversity is celebrated through colorful festivals and events that showcase the city's heritage.
Although Ottawa is the seat of Canada's federal government and a major economic and academic metropolis, the city still retains the accessibility, atmosphere and charm of a smaller town. Plentiful open green spaces, parks and wilderness areas offer scenic views, hiking, biking, bird watching and picnicking. The daily changing of the guard on the east lawn of Parliament Hill, held promptly at 9:30 AM, is a remarkable spectacle of pomp, circumstance, pageantry, and music. Afterward, take a short quarter-mile stroll to the famous "Flight of Eight" locks at the terminus of the Rideau Canal. Sit for a moment and soak up the quiet atmosphere and rich history of this remarkable waterway, which will celebrate its bicentennial in just a couple of years. You can also enjoy a bit of "gongoozling." watching the boats as they make their way up or down the flight of locks. For provisions, visit the farmers market on Sundays 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at 1000 Exhibition Way.
Gray Line offers regular and hop-on hop-off bus tours of the town. For those more self-guided explorers Ottawa Tourism is the key to unlocking the arts, culture, festivities, and food offered in the city. Check the Ottawa Festivals calendar for upcoming events. A word of warning: Ottawa is the home of seven of the nine national museums in Canada. You may want to consider adding an extra day or two to your visit.
