- Date Reported: Dec 16, 2025
- Reporter: Waterway Guide Staff
- Source: USCG District 9
- Description:
The Commander, Coast Guard Sector Northern Great Lakes, has commenced Operation TACONITE to enhance coordination of icebreaking resources. At the start of each voyage or transit, shipping companies are directed to provide estimated times of arrival for vessels operating in ice-affected waters.
Estimated times of arrival are required for vessels transiting downbound to Whitefish Point, upbound to Detour Reef Light, eastbound to Lansing Shoal Light, westbound to Round Island, or arriving at or departing from western Lake Superior ports and terminals. Similarly, vessels operating in Lake Michigan in the presence of ice should provide estimated times of arrival when entering the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal or Rock Island Passage, or when arriving at or departing from Escanaba, Green Bay, Marinette, or other ports and terminals within Green Bay.
Estimated times of arrival must be received at least six hours prior to arrival at any of these points, or once daily by 10:00 a.m. Eastern. Position reports may be filed with Sault Traffic by landline at 906-635-3299, by fax at 906-635-3238, or by email at [email protected]. Vessel ETAs must be updated whenever the arrival time changes by more than six hours.
Mariners are requested to establish VHF radio contact with the servicing icebreaker on VHF-FM Channel 16 approximately one hour before reaching the appropriate service area.
